What is Diabetic Neuropathy?
Diabetic neuropathy refers to nerve damage that is caused by diabetes. A lot of people are alerted to this condition because they have experienced pain, numbness, a burning sensation or even a tingling feeling.
Many people who have been diagnosed with diabetes suffer from diabetic neuropathy and have experienced one or all of the symptoms mentioned. As with many conditions, some patients may have more severe symptoms than others. But, there is one thing that remains universal- there are ways to help ease diabetic foot pain.

This is the type of nerve damage that tends to cause foot pain in diabetics. It is the most common form of diabetic neuropathy and in many cases, the symptoms tend to be worse at nights. Some of the symptoms include:
- Ulcers and infections of the foot
- Loss of reflexes in the ankles
- Burning sensation or tingling
- Cramps or sharp pains
How to Ease Diabetic Foot Pain
Unfortunately, once you have suffered any damage to your nerve, it is irreversible. However, there are things that Diabetics can do to prevent foot pain, further nerve damage or relieve the pain when it occurs. Here are some of the best ways to lessen your diabetic pain.
Control your blood sugar levels
This is one of the best ways to prevent foot pain that is associated with diabetes. Whenever your blood sugar levels are low, your blood vessels are not as constricted as when the sugar levels become high.
Take a Pain reliever
You don’t have to go to your doctor to get a prescription for pain killers. The ones sold over-the-counter may be able to do the job well.
Capsaicin is the compound found in peppers and it makes the pepper hot. Although it’s not necessarily a nice sensation when you bite into it, this compound has the potential to ease pain when it is applied to the skin.
Smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict and constriction increases your blood pressure which can result in foot pain. If you are a diabetic, you should stop smoking immediately.
Take warm baths
Warm water has been shown to improve blood circulation throughout the body. If you are experiencing nerve pain, you may get relief if you take a warm bath. Be careful though, you don’t want to make the water too hot.
Exercise does not mean that you should start training to be a body builder. In fact, make sure that you only do light exercises and before you do so, ensure that you get approval from your doctor.
Don’t overwork your feet
Many people do not spend enough time caring for their feet. But, if you have been experiencing foot pain and you are diabetic, you need to pay special attention to your feet. Some things that you can do are:
- Don’t stand for too long
- Wash your feet with warm water daily
- Examine your feet daily
- Wear shoes that are comfortable
