Diabetes occurs because of insulin-related problems in the body. However, once you have diabetes, you become more prone to being affected by several other health conditions.
One thing in particular that diabetics should be aware of are illnesses that pertain to the feet. Because it is so easy to overlook abnormal things that are happening with your feet, a lot of people with diabetes end up losing a leg. If you are diabetic, you need to take good care of your feet because you are prone to foot problems such as:
- ulcers/ sores that do not heal or take long to heal
- loss of feeling in the feet

How to Care for Your Feet
Not sure what you should do to take care of your feet properly? Here are some tips that can help you. Once you try to do as many of these things daily, you should be able to keep your feet healthy and prevent some complications related to diabetes.
- Keep your blood glucose levels normal
This is very important to prevent any form of complication with diabetes. Make sure you watch your sugar consumption and reduce your salt intake as well. You shouldn’t eat anything that can spike your blood pressure or your sugar levels. If you are not sure if you are consuming the proper foods, it may be wise to invest in a blood glucose meter.
- Keep your feet moisturized
Your feet need to stay moisturized so you can prevent them from getting extremely dry and cracked. If they become dry, you risk getting blisters and other injuries to your feet. Be careful when moisturizing your feet, however; you do not want to get lotion between your toes since it may lead to an infection.
- Wash your feet daily
The best way to wash your feet is by using warm water. Never use hot water to wash your feet since this can end up doing more bad than good. Once your feet are clean, make sure that you dry them properly, especially between the toes.
- Always wear something on your feet
You never know when you can step on something and hurt your feet. It is good to keep socks or shoes on your feet at all times. It doesn’t matter if you’re inside your house or not. The best way to keep your feet protected is by shielding them from possible danger.
- Practice habits that promote good blood circulation
One very good habit that you should practice at least once daily, is to elevate your feet above the level of your heart. Elevating your feet will cause any fluid that was building up to leak out. it promotes good blood circulation so you can avoid any potential foot problem that was about to occur.
No matter how little, exercise is always a good thing. Before doing any form of exercise, make sure that you speak with your doctor to confirm that it is safe for you to do so.
You do not have to do heavy exercise but your doctor should be able to recommend some form of exercise that can help to keep you active. Staying active helps your body to use up glucose so it helps to regulate your blood sugar levels.
- Shield your feet from extreme temperatures
If you live in an area that has harsh winters and summers, keep your feet warm or cool enough so they will not get damaged throughout either season. You do not want to expose your feet to any environment that is too hot or cold since they can be damaged. If your feet get exposed to either of these conditions, make sure to check them promptly to make sure there is no damage.
- Check your feet daily
If you have diabetes, you need to take extra precautions to make sure that your feet remain healthy. One of the ways you can do this is by making routine checks every day.
When you are checking your feet, look out for things like red spots, cuts, bruises, sores, swollen areas and infected toenails. If you have ingrown toenails, make sure that you pay close attention to them when checking your feet.
- Don’t skip doctor visits
You may think that everything is okay with your body and your glucose levels seem fine. However, make sure that you do not skip appointments with your doctor.
You may have overlooked something that was really important to the health of your feet. While you are speaking with your doctor, do not forget to mention anything abnormal that you have noticed with your feet since your last visit.
